The first topic of the winter program was "adaptation". In cold winter in Japan, the mountains are often covered by snow, food becomes scarce, which makes a very harsh environment for many animals. However, they have unique strategies to survive the harsh winter. Bears go underground to hybernate, rabbits turn white for a better camouflage, monkeys grow thick fur and huddle together with each other, and deers have very tough guts that can even digest the hard tree barks.

Trees also have their adaptation. Deciduous trees shead their leaves to save energy, while ever-green trees have tough needle-like leaves to maintain their function throughout winter.
